Adelle does #PimpMyBio for #PitchWars

DDpkW5NVoAASsOE

Ahoy! This is my first time entering Pitch Wars, so I figured, why not do all the things?! You can find me on Twitter and Instagram as @Adelle_Yeung. (I’m also doing #PWSummerSplash on Instagram!) So, here we go. Allow me to Pimp My Bio!

I write young adult fantasy, and for this year’s Pitch Wars, I’ll enter a YA historical urban fantasy currently called “The House with Two Faces.”

It takes place in San Francisco in the winter of 1920. Women all over the country had just gained the right to vote, booze was outlawed, and skirts were a-shortenin’.

Here’s my ~Novel Aesthetics~, including a mockup cover that I made for Wattpad in the hopes of attracting beta readers.

What I Do

When I’m not daydreaming up new stories, I voice act, draw, sew, and play video games. While I don’t play video games as often anymore, my favorite genre is still JRPGs such as Final Fantasy. Chrono Trigger is probably my all-time favorite video game, as it’s what inspired me to write in the first place. (In fact, the main character of my self-published YA fantasy trilogy The Cycle of the Six Moons is a teenage gamer!) I’ve also come to be a pretty big fan of The Legend of Zelda series. In recent years, I’ve come to enjoy action-adventure games such as Uncharted, Bioshock, and Dishonored. (Wait, are those considered action-adventure…?)

It was through my love of video games that I discovered voice acting. Video games back in the day *old man voice* didn’t have voice acting, so I came up with the characters’ voices in my head. Then one day, I got a mic and game footage and put my voice to the video! Woo! (You can get a taste of some of my “voice acting” through the Cycle of the Six Moons voice-acted book teasers I’ve created here.)

I also draw and sew, but those are more fun hobby-kinda things than things I’d consider a money maker. They make me happy, but I don’t think they’re thaaat good to sell, yunno? 😅

Speaking of money, I’m a clerical sub for the school district. I don’t think I can suffer through a permanent full time job, so I love the flexibility of the hours as a substitute. Working with the schools means 1) SOMETIMES I GET TO WORK IN THE LIBRARY!!! 2) I get to find out what kids are reading! 3) I even get a foot in the door for mentoring a creative writing class!

My Writing Process

I spend a lot of time daydreaming. I write extensive outlines, including a chapter-by-chapter synopsis, character biographies, a glossary of terms and places… It’s not until I feel like I’m bloated with so much information that I’ll burst that I finally pen the first word.

Well, “pen.” I used to write by hand until I started collecting way too many (but super cool and pretty!) spiral-bound notebooks. I had to have a certain standard when it came to my novel-writing notebooks. Spiral-bound, thick enough pages that the page beneath wouldn’t be embossed, college ruled…yeeeah.

I usually prepare for a session of writing by making some tea 🍵 Gotta have my tea!

I write almost everything digitally now. ‘Cause, you know, physical space is finite.

As a Mentee

I consider feedback carefully. I think nonstop about an issue, so I’ll usually have a plan of attack by the next day. Since I have such a flexible work schedule, I work through revisions pretty quickly. Although I take writing seriously, I like to have fun during the process. I’m not married to my words, and I always appreciate any kind of improvement. I’m also incredibly grateful 😘 I’ll probably be so thankful for your help that I’ll constantly give you shoutouts and gush about you all over social media, like I do with my artist friend, Brandon (who’s open for commissions btw 😂)

What I’d Like in a Mentor

Someone supportive yet fierce. Someone who’d gush over the story but also say, “This part needs work, and I think this might help.” Someone knowledgeable in the market and the genre. Someone who’ll go to a cat cafe with me and chat over tea and fur babies 😘

Random Facts

Ravenclaw FTW!

I’m heteroromantic asexual.

I’m allergic to dogs, penicillin (but I’ll eat bleu cheese 😂), and nuts. Funny story about the nuts, actually…

I’m pescatarian. Can’t live without sushi 😱 OR CHEESE, DUDE. OMG.

I live smack between San Francisco and Sacramento, and I actually muuuch prefer Sacramento 😅 The drive is so much less stressful. I can’t go to SF without friends 😥

I love pulling readers into a false sense of security, SO THEN I CAN MESS WITH THEIR EMOTIONS! AHAHAHA!!! 😈

Thanks for reading! ❤️ Best of luck, everyone!

Now, here’s a teaser from The House with Two Faces 😀

Guest Post – Don’t Let Romance Hijack the Plot

dawn-sunset-couple-love

Head on over to A New Look on Books for a guest post that I wrote about romancing hijacking the plot!

Here’s an excerpt!

Suddenly, our strong heroine devolves into a blubbering mess. Mutant girl falls for her captor, the princess becomes infatuated with her enemy prince, the genius has the hots for a fellow hacker. She’ll do anything to be with Pretty Boy, even forget her main goal, because Pretty Boy becomes her main goal. She’ll even make out with him amidst gunfire on a battlefield.

Guest Post – Voice Over and Writing

nbtm_tourbanner_thecycleofthesixmoons

Another stop for The Cycle of the Six Moons “Name Before the Masses” tour byGoddess Fish Promotions!  I’ve written a guest post over at The Reading Addict.  The topic is how one of my hobbies has enriched my writing.

Here’s an excerpt:

I read paChrono-Trogger-Crono-Diesssages out loud dramatically to myself to make sure that the words convey the emotion I want.

I also grew up with JRPGs.  Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI-IX, Earthbound…  This was before voice acting was common in video games, and I often wondered what the characters would sound like with voices.  In senior year of high school, I finally had the basic technology to give voices to the characters.

Guest Post – Why Video Game Music Is the Best Music to Listen to While Writing

nbtm_tourbanner_thecycleofthesixmoons

Today is another stop for The Cycle of the Six Moons “Name Before the Masses” tour by Goddess Fish Promotions!  I’ve written a guest post over at Sharing Links and Wisdom.  If you can’t tell by the appropriately named title, it’s about why  video game music is the best music to listen to while writing.

Here’s an excerpt:

I’m a gamer.  I have been since elementary school.  One important element of video games that I found helped immerse me into a fantasy world was its music.  It’s designed to set the tone, help you concentrate on the task at hand, exemplifies the written dialogue of the characters you encounter, or even makes your heart race during boss battles.

Since I was about ten years old, I’ve used video game music to help set the scene.  Unlike pop songs or ballads, there are no lyrics to distract you, listener and fellow writer, from the words that you want to write.  Here are examples of the kind of music I listen to and the scenes they fit.

Setting up the hometown of your hero before adventure calls him forth?  Try the Outside Island theme from Wind Waker!

Feel the joy and innocence of everyday life?  Feel the peaceful breeze of the ocean?

Guest Post – Storytelling and Food

nbtm_tourbanner_thecycleofthesixmoons

Today begins the first stop of The Cycle of the Six Moons “Name Before the Masses” tour by Goddess Fish Promotions!  I’ve written a guest post over at Long and Short Reviews YA.  If you can’t tell by the appropriately named title, it’s about the importance of food in storytelling.

I even made a nifty pie chart about the usage of the five senses!
