Here we have the fabulous cover art for The Cycle of the Six Moons: An Eclipsing Autumn! Like with The Starriest Summer’s cover art, this was created by artist Brandon Lacey, one of the conceptual artists for Fiona Frightening and the Wicked Wardrobe. Here’s some more behind the scenes stuff at the creation of this cover!
The image is an actual scene from the book, from Chapter Eight: Saei and Cyal, Reincarnated. This is when Saechin Kan Se takes Michelle and Jayse into the Inner Temple of Hiesan and teaches them what The Cycle of the Six Moons is, and their respective roles in the Cycle.
Hiesan (more commonly known as Dissett in Starrs) is largely based on Chinese culture, from the clothes, to the architecture, to the food, aaand some of the mannerisms.
Just before this scene, Michelle had been banned from entering the Inner Temple for being too rude. She decides to show up the next day wearing a bastardized outfit as such:
Flared, feathered hair, smoky black eyes, short skirt… I actually ended up changing what she wears in some of the promotional artwork, but I gave this to Brandon as an idea.
I also gave him an image of the Emperor of China from Mulan as inspiration for Saechin Kan Se, since Kan Se wears similar, flowing gold robes and a funny hat.
Here’s a “profile” image I drew of the old man:
Jayse isn’t wearing anything particularly special, but I did send this to Brandon as another piece of reference art, from a few chapters after the cover art’s scene.
Anyway, after all those reference images, here’s the mockup silhouette sketch I made!
Here’s Brandon’s first sketch. I told him to make Saechin Kan Se shorter and the Universal Mirror taller.
I wanted something on the floor of the temple, even though the old man would probably throw a fit if his floor was dirty. Still, for aesthetics sake, we decided on gold petals, and used maple leaves as an accent for the “autumn” feeling.
…Then I told Brandon that he misspelled “autumn” 😛
Once all the colors were in, I decided that black for my name would be too dark, so we ended up going with white instead.
The Mirror is supposed to be blasting out bright light, and Brandon assured me that, yes, the Mirror will be glowing.
Et voilà! Anyway, here’s an image of the OLD cover art, which I had used on printed paperbacks that were never for sale.
